Thirteen Kitchens, One Roof: A Guide to Plaza Universitaria
A tour of the thirteen kitchens at Plaza Universitaria, the food hall in historic downtown San Salvador, and what to try at each one.
A food hall is measured by the strength of each of its kitchens. At Plaza Universitaria there are thirteen, and each tells a different story. Here is a quick guide so you don’t miss a thing.
For a serious meal
- Mar y Mar — Fresh seafood, cocktails and ice-cold beers. The ceviche bar and sportsbar of the house.
- Los Boomwalos — Pupusas made with masa, hand and memory. Salvadoran heritage in its purest form.
- Rincón — Sandwiches with an Argentine soul and a choripán that makes no compromises.
- El Gringo — Burgers, fries and chicken strips for those who know what they want.
- Laca Laca — Mexico turned celebration, with measured heat and plenty of generosity.
- Piano Piano — Italian cooking, paninis, baguettes and artisan bakery.
- El Chory — The hot dog elevated to a serious craving.
- Pavito Criollo — The Salvadoran turkey sandwich, that year-end ritual, all year round.
For something sweet and coffee
- Barista Bot — A robot barista crafting hot and cold drinks, with and without coffee.
- Bom Bom — A “doubly good” bakery and patisserie.
- El Sin Rival — Artisan sorbets from an unrivaled Salvadoran tradition.
- El Carrusel — Shaved ice, sweets and chocobananos around the carousel spinning at the center of the gallery.
To take home more than food
- Árbol de Dios — Salvadoran art and craft, heir to Fernando Llort’s visual language: color, symbol and identity to take home.
