Let’s be honest from the first line: if you’re looking for breakfast at seven in the morning, historic downtown is still waking up. But if your idea of breakfast is the good kind —no alarm clock, no rush, closer to brunch than to a schedule—, Plaza Universitaria opens every day at 11:00 AM, and mornings here are in a category of their own.
The mid-morning table
Inside the iron hall, the first hour of the day is the quietest and the brightest. Light pours through the glass structure, the carousel spins slowly and the long tables are freshly set. It’s the best time to come with a newspaper, a laptop, or someone worth a long conversation.
What to order
- Bom Bom — artisan bakery and patisserie. Freshly baked bread and sweet pieces that solve any morning craving.
- Piano Piano — Italian tradition, neighborhood-style: paninis, baguettes and their own bakery. A cappuccino with a mid-morning panini is a serious breakfast.
- Barista Bot — the Plaza’s robot barista crafts hot and cold drinks, with and without coffee. Watching it work is part of the meal.
- El Sin Rival — because nobody said an artisan sorbet can’t be the end of a breakfast.
With a view of history
Plaza Universitaria sits on Avenida España, right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral, on the grounds of the University of El Salvador’s first campus. Breakfast here means starting the day exactly where downtown beats: afterwards you can cross to the Cathedral, walk 4 minutes to BINAES, or simply order another round of coffee.
