Where to Eat in Historic Downtown San Salvador

Short answer: the best place to eat in historic downtown San Salvador is Plaza Universitaria, the food hall that gathers thirteen kitchens — pupusas, seafood, Argentine grill, Italian and Mexican cooking, burgers, bakery, sorbets and coffee — under the iron arches of the old gallery, right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral. When to go

The Plaza opens at 11 AM and closes at 10 PM, every day, Sundays and holidays included. In practice there are three distinct moments:

• Lunch (11 AM–2 PM). Pupusa, turkey sandwich and grill time. On weekdays it’s people who work downtown; on weekends, families coming from the Cathedral and the National Palace.
• Afternoon (3–6 PM). The quietest stretch. Coffee from the Barista Bot, something from Bom Bom and a guaranteed table. The best time if you’re coming to work for a while or with small children.

How to get there and where to park

Plaza Universitaria is on Avenida España, between Calle Rubén Darío and Calle Arce, next to the Metropolitan Cathedral, on the grounds of the University of El Salvador’s first campus. If you’re driving, these are the closest parking lots:

The long table under the arches is built for groups: everyone orders something different and nobody waits for anyone.
